Canada's King

Enemies of the Crown in Canada know they can’t change our Constitution. They don’t directly call for Republicanism. Instead, they seek to incrementally undermine the political and cultural role of the Monarch in Canada. Federal celebrations in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee were virtually non-existent. In fact, this was the only Jubilee in the Queen’s reign unmarked by the striking of a commemorative medal. The “soft republicanism” in which the monarchy is de-emphasized and royal symbols and vestiges are gradually removed from the public sphere—already underway—will only accelerate following the passing of the Queen.
